A short history of hactivism

The first act of hactivism was recorded in 1989. The Wank worm changed the login screen of many computers connected to DOE (Dept of Energy), HEPNET and NASA in a protest against nuclear armament. The screen read: “Worms against nuclear killers. Your system has been officially WANKed”.

Apple’s safety questioned…

Apple’s App store safety has been questioned lately, after the revelation of several cases of fraud through iTunes. Ryan Matthew Pierson was faced with a nasty surprise when he was charged with the amount of $430 for buying guns, nightclubs and cars in iMobsters, a popular game on iPhone. Sadly, Mr Pierson had never played iMobstes, yet he could see these purchases happening in real time.

Paypal XSS vulnerability

Paypal was affected by a cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability, an exposure that allows a hacker to inject client side script into Web pages viewed by other users.
The hacker would be able to trick a Paypal subscriber into clicking a crafted version of the link and therefore, hijack the user’s session, financial transactions, money transfers etc.

Anti-SOPA billboard

Need to raise money for a good cause? Now you can do it over the internet. That’s what Alexis Ohanian, co-founder of Reddit, did. He raised money to put up a huge billboard at Texas to oppose Texas representative Lamar Smith, author of the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA). The billboard said “Don’t mess with the Internet”.

Now Americans can be alerted to potential online fraud, from the disclosure of their banking and credit card information and social security numbers. The service is provided for free by AllClear ID, a company that offers identity theft protection and which cooperates with the non-profit National Cyber-Forensics and Training Alliance (NCFTA)
